O'Hooley & Tidow: superb 3rd release from this Yorkshire, UK-based piano/accordion-driven exquisitely harmonizing duo who were nominated for Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 2013 Folk Awards and hailed "The Best Act of Cambridge Folk Festival" by The Guardian newspaper; produced by Mercury Award-nominated and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Diver whose masterful contribution of strings, percussion, guitars, autoharp, pedal steel and snippets of electronica sympathetically gird the songs which comprise 8 originals and covers of Ewan MacColl's "Just A Note" and Nic Jones' "Ruins By The Shore"(O'Hooley is a member of the Nic Jones Trio). Collectively the songs pay tribute to the resilience of Mankind in the face of challenging circumstances, and thematically contrasts logically with their 2nd release "The Fragile", "Peculiar Brood" examines suicide bombings from a mother-dove's perspective, "Summat's Brewin'" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_REuW6-iVdU) name checks a number of local independent breweries and praises the home-brewers who initiated the demand for "real ale", other themes addressed include asylum seekers, the continuing hunting of foxes, emigration, an anti-Putin pro Pussy Riot tribute, religion and forbidden love;

Gathering Time: 3rd release (first from this GT lineup) from Long Island NYC-based folk-rock trio who harken back to the harmony driven glory days of CS&N, The Byrds and PP&M. On this release they seem intent on establishing the continuation of their established sound and include 5 re-recorded tracks from their 2012 release "Red Apples" in addition to 3 traditional pieces and covers of Phil Ochs' "There But For Fortune" and Stephen Stills' "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"; the latter may well be a live gig success but seems more like filler on an album that might have worked better as an EP notwithstanding the need to have something current to sell at live gigs; the album's original material is solid and augurs well;

Roosevelt Dime: Oberlin College-born NYC subway stations-busking honed purveyors of what they call "Steamboat Soul" featuring banjo, guitar, bass, gutbucket bass, clarinet and sax, augmented by guests Bruce Harris and Sam Hoyt on trumpets, David Farrell on piano and vocal contributions from Red Molly and Chris Eldridge(Punch Brothers); Roosevelt Dime produce a wild and wonderful banquet of American roots music with original songs and traditional pieces nicely seasoned with flavors of Appalachian string band, Memphis soul, and New Orleans Dixieland served up with Brooklyn panache - sumptuous!

Matty Powell: Scant web presence with absolutely no bio info, and any accompanying one sheet long since lost, for this straight forward, uncomplicated and very accessible 2012 release which I believe is the debut release from this Saskatoon, Saskatchewan born Canadian singer-songwriter with an interesting and engaging voice (Johnny Flynn comes to mind) with a good compositional sense and an ear for a good melody; assisted by some excellent musicians on bass, electric guitar, drums and keyboards. The material covers a number of failed personal relationships, government indifference and mistreatment of the indigenous Indian population including reservations and involuntary child adoptions, and a lovely song to his daughter Freya;

We Banjo 3: multiple award-winning bewilderingly talented Irish, Old-Time and bluegrass quartet featuring Enda and Feargal Scahill and Martin and David Howley; awards include Irish Times Traditional Album of the Year award and Livies 2014 Vocal/Instrumental Album of the Year and after amazing and delighting crowds at Milwaukee 2013 they are coming down south to Dallas NTIF 2014!(http://ntif.org/performers/national.html)

Pete Seeger - American folk-singer, activist and international icon (5/3/1919 - 1/27/2014)
