Woodbine And Ivy Band: "The Static Brothers are chuffed to be handed the astonishing new album by our friends in Manchester, The Woodbine & Ivy Band. This beauty pushes on from the excellently received self-titled debut in 2011. Their line-up again features a wealth of Manchester’s finest musicians capturing a magical folk oeuvre flecked with psych, prog, jazz and country rock. Partly inspired by G.I. Gurdjieff’s theories on what he termed “waking sleep”, this collection of ten tracks sounds appropriately out of step and out of time, as if the product of an off-kilter dream; of instinct or the subconscious. Where their debut drew comprehensively on folk tradition, earning glittering reviews and favourable comparisons with the likes of Sandy Denny, Fairport Convention and Crazy Horse along the way, this latest outing pulls in a different direction. Alongside three trad folk songs and three covers, there are four original compositions too. The beauty of the Woodbine & Ivy Band’s approach is in making these disparate songs appear genuinely timeless, sounding both steeped in careworn tradition yet also fresh and invigorated. For the first album they worked with a different singer for each song, but here all vocal duties are taken care of by two highly contrasting singers - the soft, amorphous voice of Jenny McCormick and the coarser tones of James Raynard. The rich and varied elements of ‘Sleep On Sleeping On’ are as bold and colourful as its evocative cover artwork, by Anna Wilson-Hall. The album is indebted to British folk classics, with touchstones such as the Albion Band’s ‘Rise Up Like the Sun’ and Lal & Mike Waterson’s ‘Bright Phoebus’, but that pedigree is augmented by gracefully textured arrangements which introduce pedal steel, horns, drones and glissandos, along with pastoral synth washes like a Klaus Schulze soundtrack for a film about allotments."  - Static Caravan Website

Jimmy Aldridge And Sid Goldsmith: "Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith play traditional and original folksong of the British Isles. They tell stories of hardship, joy, struggle and celebration held together with driving banjo and guitar arrangements and close vocal harmonies. They have both been heavily influenced by the songs and singers of East Anglia, where they both grew up, but their music also reflects the diversity of voices within the folk and acoustic world. They weave traditional English folksong with Irish, Scottish and American tunes, and their own compositions draw on many different styles. The songs on their new album have been picked up from sessions, singarounds, gigs, recordings and learned from friends. The stories are varied but there is a common thread of political struggle and resistance, and the decline of the industries that were the backbone of England for many generations."  - Artists' Website

Richard Kitson: "From a young age Sheffield born Richard Kitson immersed himself in the music that he loved; relentlessly emulating the sounds he heard on records from Bob Dylan to Big Bill Broonzy, Robert Johnson to Rory Gallagher. He first taught himself the harmonica and dabbled with drums before making guitar technique not merely a passion, but an artistic obsession. Moving on from a successful first album it was something of a revelation to discover the music of Bert Jansch, Davy Graham and John Martyn. Kitson adopted a new finger-picking style that not only unlocked a world of new potential in his personal playing; but also released a new depth of songwriting that has become a primary focus. Self-taught by listening to the greats and with a deep sense of the tradition and craft of blues and folk, Richard is a musician's musician - it all comes from the soul. From his first eponymous album release in 2003 Kitson's sound has matured and developed along with a career supporting some of the biggest names in folk and blues around the UK. He has regularly supported well-respected artists from across the globe such as Michael Marra, Otis Gibbs, Boo Hewerdine, John Tams, Wizz Jones and Peggy Seeger."  - Artist's Website

Faran Flad: 5, 6 or even 7 piece outfit (depending on where you are reading on their website) hailing out of Belgium tho with practically no information on the website about the band or its members. Lovely collection of tunes (original and trad I think) and traditional song, with a couple from Steeleye's stellar repertoire, performed beautifully and sympathetically.

Si Barron: "is a folk singer, songwriter, superb self-taught musician based in Somerset. He has a deep relationship with English traditional music and a gift for turning time-honoured melodies into foot stomping anthems on guitar, dulcimer or pedal organ. With his rich voice and intense driving guitar sound which can switch from fast and boisterous to measured and moving (sometimes within the same song) Si communicates an infectious love of English music through his exciting renditions of the tradition and his own strongly narrative songs. As one half of Barron Brady alongside Rosalind Brady he has travelled around the UK and sung in many of the main Folk Clubs and Venues. Here in a solo capacity the full verve and diversity of his ability is unrestrained and makes for an exciting evening of acoustic entertainment."  - Artist's Website

Smokey And The Mirror: Fayetteville, AR-based husband and wife duo of Bryan (acoustic guitar, vocals) and Bernice Hembree (double bass and vocals), formerly of the well regarded trio Three Penny Acre, here with their forthcoming second (and always difficult) album which on the basis of the tracks here seems to have gone extremely well! They will be making their Little Rock Folk Club debut on Sat Jun 6th 2015.
