Magna Carta: "Magna Carta was founded in April, 1969, and is one of the longest running bands in the world today. The band has seen a number of personnel changes, but the common factor has always been Chris Simpson. Song writer, poet, acoustic guitar player and vocalist, he has been largely responsible for the band's unique sound, and has had uncanny success in gathering high quality musicians around him. He founded the band with Lyell Tranter, guitarist, and Glen Stuart, vocalist extraordinaire, and their first professional gig was at the Cambridge Folk Festival. A year later the band cut the first of their 30 odd albums, six of which have gone Gold, and three Silver. The essence of Magna Carta for the last twenty years has been Chris Simpson and Linda Simpson. Chris has been singing with Linda since 1984. They have been joined in recent years by Matt Barnhoorn, an outstanding Dutch fiddle player. In concert and on record they play with a variety of fine musicians, some of whom have been associated with Magna Carta for a long time. They continue to tour extensively." - Artists' website

Richard Thompson: Say no more! Nudge, nudge, wink wink, eh? Know what I mean?

Linda Em: "Linda is a unique singer/songwriter whose music skillfully blends the traditions of Celtic narrative, smoky folk and contemporary blues. Her songs speak hauntingly of life experienced and truly felt; this is music for grown-ups. Linda sings because it is how she processes and celebrates the world around her; an aged soul with a character honed by a life lived consisting of trials, laughter, tribulations and happiness, brought expertly and passionately to her sound. Linda came from southern Ireland in the 1980s to a London experimenting with the free thinking sounds of the post punk era and quickly gravitated to the plaintive laments of Kirsty MacColl and other reflective balladeers. This was fueled by regular road trips home where she continued to share her grandmother’s folk singing and Accordion playing. Trad and folk were her early imprints and the fascination with the Celtic narrative and the oral traditions of storytelling fed her imagination. Linda spent her early youth in East London and in her late teens studied community arts which fed her imagination and fueled a love, not only for music but for art, poetry while nodding the cap towards theatre, writers and the written word. This hotbed of soul searching and expression was a conduit for her own growth resulting in a sound and a writing style that is unique, personal and compelling. Linda has enjoyed performing with the dexterous musicians in the East London haunts cultivating a sound that has been described as cross between Melanie Safka and Christine McVie. This is a girl who strikes a chord with the seasoned and youthful alike and is starting to be taken very seriously – think “Old Grey Whistle Test” in the early years and you’ve got to conclude…watch this space!" - Bio, artist's website

The Jeremiahs: "    This Irish quartet has been making a name for itself rather fast over the two short years since its founding. Together, Joe Gibney (vocals, whistle), Brian Corry (tin whistle, flute, fiddle), James Ryan (guitar, bouzouki) and Jean-Christophe Morel (fiddle) make a sound that can best be described as a fresh and healthy blend of the traditional and the contemporary. From the outset, on their debut CD’s first offering – band-penned tune The Luggites – you know you’re in the presence of four gifted musicians, and you can feel their accomplishment in the confident phrasing and skilled blending of dynamics, which engage the listener right away. There’s a comparable sense of being completely at ease with their instruments and musicianship pervading all five instrumental tracks on the album, which probably needs no further comment beyond recommendation, although I’d be tempted to single out the sensitive bowing on Injee for special mention. However, on balance I feel that it’s on the disc’s five songs that the Jeremiahs arguably show their strongest hand, especially in the art of arrangement. It helps, of course, that singer Joe has a fine command of range and expression, and that his voice can cope well with a wider range of material than one might expect to encounter in the repertoire of an Irish band. There’s a well-paced take on Dave Sudbury’s perennial narrative The King Of Rome, vibrant renditions of Ewan MacColl’s tribute The North Sea Holes and the shanty Hog’s Eye Man, and for contrast Adam Holmes’ love story Mary, although many will judge the disc’s highlight to be the self-penned Forgotten Sons, a plaintive song of emigration inspired by a documentary on the forgotten Irish in England. A thoroughly commendable debut disc, whose only (small) failing is the white-on-grey colour scheme chosen for the digipack, which renders the lyrics and track notes less than ideally discernible (at least to these ageing eyes!).” — David Kidman The Living Tradition  - Artists' website

Joel Rafael: 9th release from this dyed in the wool West Coast folkie with a long history of championing the songs of Woody Guthrie and performing at the annual Woody Fest in Okemah, OK. and co-writing two songs with Guthrie using lyrics provided by his daughter Nora Lee Guthrie. Along the way he has collaborated with numerous artists including Steve Earle, Jack Tempchin and the late Jack Hardy. Produced by Texas Music Awards Producer of the Year winner (and guitarist of choice for most of Austin's music scene) Jon Inmon, with Greg Leisz on electric guitars, dobro and pedal steel, James "Hutch" Hutchinson on bass, and guest  electric guitar appearances by Inmon and Terry "Buffalo" Ware who performed to great appreciation at Little Rock Folk Club with Fayetteville duo Smokey and the Mirror recently.

Ellis Paul: "Some artists document their lives through their music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era overall. Woody Guthrie comes to mind, and so does Bob Dylan; Bruce Springsteen certainly as well. Yet few others, for whatever genius they may possess, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond, be it in a coming of age, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences. Ellis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some may refer to him as a folksinger, he is more, for lack of a better word, a singular storyteller, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express the feelings, thoughts and sensibilities that most people can relate to in one way or another, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes? The hope for redemption? Descriptions of those things that are both near and dear. The sharing of love... intimate, passionate and enduring. These are the scenarios that emerge from Ellis Paul’s new album, Chasing Beauty, a set of songs which detail, in typical Paul fashion, stories of people and places that reflect larger truths about us all. “Kick Out the Lights (Johnny Cash)” pays tribute to that fearless American icon name-checked in its title. “Plastic Soldier” offers homage to a wounded soldier returning from Afghanistan. A real-life barnstorming pilot takes the spotlight in “Jimmie Angel’s Flying Circus,” while iconic Boston blue collar musician Dennis Brennan takes the focus in “Waiting on a Break.” Even the Empire State Building and the Boston Red Sox get their due, via “Empire State” and “UK Girl (Boston Calling),” respectively. In reality, these stories are a continuation of tales Paul has told for more than a quarter century, over the expanse of nineteen albums, numerous critical kudos (15 Boston Music Awards alone), inclusion in several movie soundtracks, and stages he’s headlined both near and far. “I’ve got a car with over 4?75?,000 miles on it, and it's my third road vehicle,?” Paul declares. “I’ve been doing 200 shows a year for over twenty years. There isn’t a town in the country where I won’t find a friend. I’m a nomad. And I’m gonna write and play until I’m gone.” - Artist's website

Ashley Hutchings MBE: "The legendary ASHLEY HUTCHINGS, band-leader extraordinaire, is also a multi-talented writer, arranger, producer and broadcaster. His influence and innovation are celebrated throughout the music world. The founder of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion Band, Ashley continues to be in the forefront of English music." - Artist's Official webpage

Honoured this year in the Queen's Birthday honours list with an MBE for services to folk music... and all one can say is: about bloody time too! In a just world this man would have his own channel on the in-flight entertainment system of all BA flights into the UK... where listeners would be entertained and educated simultaneously... wow! What a concept...
